ABC Wednesday - E

E is for ELEPHANT
Isn't it shameful the way I keep resorting to my most recent safari photos?
However I am still on a high about the trip every time I look at the photos and as they are pertinent to the letter of the week - why not!

The first of these was taken in the Tarangire National Park, whilst the second was taken at Lake Manyara. Note the difference in colour, caused entirely by the colour of the soil in which they had been covering themselves. The soil in Tarangire is remarkably red.

The elephant in Lake Manyara was momentarily quite a scary moment as we had stopped the Land Cruiser to watch several of them and this one headed straight for us and had a particularly evil look in his eye. He decided that he had scared us enough and simply walked across the road in front of us -PHEW!

Olympic Medals

Are you enjoying the Olympics?
I am not following them avidly, but have spent a considerable amount of time during the first week watching some of the Swimming, Gymnastics and over the weekend the Athletics. What a wonderful series of performances by all of the British team (I refuse to call it TEAM GB - what is all that about?)

Discussing the current state of the medal table with one of my colleagues this morning we were bemoaning the comparison in the media of our tally of 27, 12 of which are Gold, with the tallies of China (65, 37)and the USA (66, 19).
We set to thinking about the comparative sizes of the countries and their probable expenditure on sports training etc.
To even up the books we considered a European Union comparison with these countries which would give a whopping great tally of 169 medals, 53 of which are Gold!!!

Put that in your pipe ................

'English' grammar

Reading Liz's post "Rising strongly?" on the misuse of words, poor grammar and punctuation immediately got me inspired to write on the subject.

Like many of those commenting on Liz's post I too hate poor punctuation and bad grammar, especially when used in signage and documentation that is intended for public viewing.
I am sure we could keep these posts going forever on examples spotted (hmmm maybe a separate blog to record them all?).

Something allied to these inappropriate uses of the English language seems to be on the increase recently; and that is the habit of making verbs out of words that are clearly NOT verbs. The most recent that is currently making me fume is encountered almost every evening on broadcasts from the Olympics (or should that be Olympic's :-)) - e.g "we are all expecting X to medal in the xxx final" I wonder which country this emanates from?

ABC Wednesday - D

D is for DRAGONFLY
Although I am sure it is probably some other form of fly such as a Damsel Fly but hey what the heck they both begin with D
These were taken in our garden several weeks ago when the weather was a little warmer - you remember that day of summer we had?
